CHAMPAIGN —
The Illinois women’s basketball team didn’t get the type of finish they wanted for its three seniors.
Early foul trouble and poor shooting cost the Fighting Illini as they lost their home finale to the Ohio State Buckeyes 64-53 on Thursday night.
Seniors Adrienne GodBold and Karisma Penn combined for 38 points as Penn led the way with her 13th double-double on the year with team-highs in points (24) and rebounds (14).
Joining those two in the senior night festivities was Kersten Mangrum, who had her basketball career cut short because of concussions this season.
With the loss, Illinois drops to 16-11 overall and 9-6 in the Big Ten Conference, while Ohio State improves to 16-12, 6-9.
Up next for Illinois is a 3 p.m. contest on Sunday in West Lafayette, Ind., against the No. 25-rated Purdue Boilermakers.
Michigan St. 68
No. 25 Purdue 61
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Annalise Pickrel scored 18 points and Jasmine Thomas and Klarissa Bell scored 17 apiece to lead Michigan State to a 68-61 victory over No. 25 Purdue Thursday night.
The Spartans (21-7, 9-6) led 37-26 at halftime and maintained the advantage the rest of the way to post their first win over a ranked opponent this season.
Purdue (20-8, 9-6) twice closed the gap to one point in the second half, and trailed just 63-61 with 4 minutes to play but the Boilermakers didn’t score again in losing for the fifth time in their last seven games.
Drey Mingo and KK Houser led the Boilermakers with 16 points each and Taylor Manuel scored 12.
Purdue won the earlier meeting 67-62 in overtime on Jan. 27 in East Lansing, Mich.
