LOCAL ROUNDUP: Hilltoppers remain unbeaten in VVC

HOOPESTON —  The Schlarman volleyball team will go into Vermilion County Tournament action undefeated in Vermilion Valley Conference action after a 25-11, 25-16 win over Hoopeston Area on Thursday.

Laura Gross had five kills and five blocks for the Hilltoppers while Janelle Marion had four kills and three digs, Jordan Marganski had three kills and three blocks and Joslyn Dietzen had four aces.

The Hilltoppers are 16-2 and 11-0 in the VVC and will start play in the Tournament on Saturday.

Milford 0


MILFORD — Mary Bass had eight kills and seven blocks as the Blue Devils defeated the Bearcats.

Abby Bergman had five kills and seven blocks for Bismarck-Henning while Lauren McKenzie has 12 assists and two aces and Morgan Gerbsch had 14 digs.

The Blue Devils are 13-6 and 8-3 in the VVC and will play either Westville or Oakwood in the Vermilion County Tournament on Saturday.

GEORGETOWN — Rachel Miles had seven kills and 11 digs as the Trojans beat the Buffaloes 30-28, 25-19.

Morgan Zindars had four aces and eight assists for Armstrong-Potomac and Mackenzie Vinson had nine assists.

Taylor Smith had 11 kills and three blocks for Georgetown-Ridge Farm while Kelsey Buckman had eight kills and Lexi Silva had six kills and two blocks.

The Trojans are 14-8 and 8-3 in the VVC and both teams will meet again at the Vermilion County Tournament on Saturday.

Westville 2

Oakwood 1


FITHIAN — Peyton Jones had eight kills and eight blocks, but it was not enough as the Comets lost to the Tigers 25-17, 16-25, 25-22.

Harlena Hardin had eight kills and three blocks and Kaylee Moreman had 20 assists for Oakwood, who will face Westville again on Saturday in the Vermilion County Tournament.

Chrisman 0


CHRISMAN — Emilie McFadden had seven kills as the Storm beat the Cardinals 25-17, 25-18.

Britton Seaman had six kills for Salt Fork, while Jessica Muelhler had four kills and three blocks, Kayln Learnard had three aces and 16 digs and Allie Trosper had 12 assists.

Brett Bishop had four kills, five blocks and an ace for Chrisman, while Dana Mitchell had 11 assists ad Kelsey Potter, Shelby Warner and Maddi Romoser each had three kills.

The Storm are 11-11 and 8-3 in the VVC and will start action at the Vermilion County Tournament on Saturday.

The Cardinals are 13-11 and 6-5 and will play Westville on Tuesday.

Hahne wins at Paxton


PAXTON — Schlarman’s Jesse Hahne had a time of 16 minutes, 11 seconds in a quadrangular meet with the Hilltoppers, Hoopeston Area, Clinton Central and host Paxton-Buckley-Loda.

PBL won the meet as a team but the Cornjerkers were second as David Cohen was seventh (18:34) and Danny Justice took 12th (19:12).

In the girls race, Madie Brown was fourth (22:23) and Hannah Bray was fifth (22:40) as Hoopeston Area again took second to PBL.

Sarah Larson was sixth for Schlarman (22:45), who ended up third.

DACC announces Hall of Fame class


DANVILLE — DACC announced the class of 2012 for its Hall of Fame with the Hall of Fame banquet set for Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. at the Days Hotel.

The inductees are former DACC men’s basketball coach Jim Heeren, who coached the Jaguars to a 25-7 record in 1971-1972, still the most wins for a DACC men’s team in a season.

Also, former DACC baseball player and former DACC softball coach Dave Strebin will be inducted, along with track/cross country athlete Que Broadnax, former DACC wrestling coach Dan Winland and WDAN-AM’s Mike Hulvey as a friend of the program.

Space is limited for the banquet and anyone interested in attending should contact DACC athletics director Tim Bunton at 443-8551.
