Local Roundup: Verkler advances to state

CHAMPAIGN — Danville’s Kristin Verkler will be going to next weekend’s state meet in two different events after qualifying in Saturday’s sectional at Champaign Centennial High School.

Verkler won the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2 minutes 9 seconds and was second in the 100 butterfly (57.04).

The Vikings as a team took third in the meet.

Verkler will start the state meet Friday at Evanston.

COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY

DACC women 23rd in NJCAA’s


INA — Lisa Ponder was 60th with a time of 20 minutes, 7 seconds as the Lady Jaguars took 23rd in the NJCAA Division II cross country meet at Rend Lake College.

Alicia Hightower was 111th (21:00) for DACC while Irma Bautista was 136th (21:37), Jennifer Luna was 170th (22:10) and Autumn Shippy was 183rd (22:31).

There were two members of the DACC men’s team competing as well, with Colt Shaw taking 122nd (28:34) and Austin Dart finishing at 167th (29:23).

MATTOON — The Jaguars rebounded from Friday’s loss to Oakland Community College with a 95-81 win over Rock Valley Community College in a consolation bracket semifinal at the Laker Classic.

DACC started the game of 15-2 and never looked back from that, taking a 45-23 lead at halftime and would be up by as much as 29 points in the second half.

Chris Whitehead had 17 points and six assists to lead the Jaguars, while Chrisman product Cody Owen had a career-high 14 points, Mike Ruce had 11 points and 12 rebounds, Ronnie White had 11 points and seven rebounds and Raheem Jackson had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

DACC is 4-1 and will play Lewis and Clark Community College in the consolation championship today.

DAYTON, Ohio — The Demonz scored early and often, scoring at least three goals a period as they defeated the Dashers.

Henry Coxe, George Isham and Ryan Stern scored goals for Danville, while Dustin Skinner had two assists and David Lun, Billy Hunt and Justin Levac each had one.

The Dashers are 2-4 and will play Dayton again today.
