Hoopeston's Houmes signs with Bradley

HOOPESTON — Going into nursing has always been in the plans for Hoopeston Area’s Lauren Houmes.

So on Wednesday afternoon, Houmes signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Bradley University in Peoria, where she will run cross country and track for the Braves.

“The coaches are great. The size of the school is great. But what first drew me there was their nursing program, which is my main priority,’’ said Houmes, who attend a running camp there this past summer. “I got to know the coaches and see what they were all about.

“They have been helping me and giving me advice all year. This is where I was supposed to go and where I fit in.’’

Competing against Bradley for the talents of Houmes was Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais.

“Olivet was definitely a big contender, but I just felt that I fit better in at Bradley,’’ Houmes said. “It took probably a good three months. It took a lot of weighing the positives and the negatives.

“I definitely like the environment of Peoria. It’s a running community and I feel it’s a good place to continue my cross country and track career. It’s the next step or next chapter.’’

One of the very important positives for Houmes was the great relationship between the nursing program at Bradley and the athletics program.

“I know it’s going to be real competitive and there could be a lot of pressure running at an NCAA Division I school, but I’m really excited about the level of competition and the resources that will be available for me,’’ she said.

And how did she become interested in nursing?

“Well, my mom (Cindy) is a nurse,’’ Houmes said. “And I’m really interested in anatomy. I had a really great eighth grade science teacher, he was also my cross country coach (Rich Stipp).’’

After finishing sixth at the state cross country meet, Houmes is looking for an all-state year on the track.
