ROUNDUP: Danville claims Pekin title

PEKIN — Three years ago, the Danville girls tennis team finished near the bottom of the Pekin Invitational, but with three championships on Saturday, the Vikings was able to win the tournament.

“We had a great tournament,” Danville coach Scott Simpson said. “We are starting three freshmen, a sophomore, a junior and two seniors and it shows the depth that we have this year.”

No. 2 singles player senior Bethany Sexton and No. 3 singles player junior Carrie Zillman each had 3-0 records to win their respective titles for the Vikings while the No. 2 doubles team of freshmen Amy Shah and Neha Patel were also 3-0.

Another freshman, Rachael Lewis and sophomore Courtney Hart were 2-1 and took fifth at No. 1 doubles while senior No. 1 singles player Emma Peck was 2-1 and took third.

“Emma played some very good matches. She only lost to the girl who ended up winning the tournament and gave her a better match as well,” Simpson said. “Everyone played better in their last matches, which is good in a tournament setting.”

Simpson said the team can only build from this and move on through the season up until the Big 12 conference tournament.

“These early tournaments are good to get us ready for the tournaments later in the season,” Simpson said. “The girls have worked hard all year and today was a great turnaround.”

The Vikings will play a dual match on Tuesday against Mattoon.

Danville coach Steve Houghton was not pleased with the offense throughout the day.
