WESTVILLE —
Winning certainly isn’t everything in the world of sports.
A team can put together a game to be proud of and walk away with a loss. Or they can walk away with a win and not come away satisfied.
The latter was the case for the Danville Lady Vikings volleyball team as they beat Westville 25-22, 26-24 in their season opener.
“We are better than how we played tonight,” Danville coach Steve Houghton said. “We need to be playing at our capability and not the level of our competition. We play like that (today against Bismarck-Henning), we lose big. We play like that against Big 12 teams, we might win one game”
“At first, we did well” Danville senior Kim Youhas said. “But then we slacked off some of the match. We could have done a lot better”
Danville came out of the gate firing as the Lady Vikings took a 9-2 lead early in game one.
Danville recorded two blocks in the run (one credited to Youhas, one to Youhas and Shawneis Jones). Danville kept attacking not allowing back-to-back Westville points leading to a 19-8 Danville lead.
With their backs to the wall, Westville senior Kirstin Hazel led the Lady Tigers to a seven point service run and closed the gap to 19-16.
Danville scored one more point on a Youhas kill before Westville answered with three more points of their own with two kills from senior Emily Taylor.
After a back-and-forth point brigade, the teams ended up tied at 22-22. Danville broke the tie and didn’t look back as the Lady Vikings took the first game, 25-22.
Westville didn’t let the game one loss affect their psyche and used it as inspiration.
Taylor served nine times with two aces to start game two giving the Lady Tigers a substantial 9-0 lead.
“We were too cocky coming into the second game” said Jones, a junior for the Vikings.
Danville was down but not out as they rallied multiple times, closing the gap to 6-10, 11-13, 17-20 and 20-22.
But each time Danville began to close in Westville would stretch the deficit leading to a 24-20 Westville lead needing only one more point to take the match to three games.
However, Danville wasn’t ready to quit as they put rallied and took the game to a 24-24 tie.
The Vikings took their first lead of the second game with a kill by junior Michaleen Foreman and won game and the match on a kill by sophomore Alexus Jimson-Miller.
Westville, which fell to 1-2 on the season, was led in kills by Barth with seven, while Taylor finished with four. Taylor also had a team-high two aces in the match.
Danville travels to Bismarck tonight for a 6 p.m. match against the Bismarck-Henning Blue Devils.
The next match for Westville is Tuesday at Armstrong-Potomac.
