WEST LEBANON, Ind. —
With a strong defensive effort and a run-oriented offense the Seeger Patriots extended their 15-year dominance over the Attica Red Ramblers with a 20-0 victory Friday night.
The Patriots ran the ball over 90 percent of their plays and were led by senior running back Brandon Ruemler.
Ruemler led the offensive attack running for 128 of Seeger’s 172 yards and scoring all three touchdowns.
“We were real aggressive coming out” said Ruemler, “Our offensive line was great for us tonight . Brian Peterson stepped up big, (Braydon) Flick played with an injured foot. They were huge”
Though they were shutout, Attica played a very competitive ball game despite the score.
“I thought we played a tough game,” said Attica Head Coach Ryan Good. “We let up some in the fourth quarter and Seeger was still full of steam. We moved the ball well but we just couldn’t convert and put up points.”
Defense dominated the first 10 minutes of the game as both teams were unable to get a first down on their opening drive.
On Seeger’s first drive, senior running back Brandon Ruemler ran 3 times netting 5 yards and forcing the Patriots to punt.
Ruemler punted and got a very lucky bounce as the ball went out of bounds at the Attica 2-yard line.
After a three and out of their own, Attica punted and Seeger took over at the Attica 22-yard line. The Patriots took advantage of this great field position as Seeger drove down the field, scoring on a six-yard run by Ruemler.
The teams went back and forth, drive after drive with both sides showing strong rushing attempts and tough defense.
Late in the first half, Patriot linebacker Daniel Hunley intercepted a Jacob Mroczkiewicz pass around mid field.
After the interception Seeger ran the ball on five straight plays gaining 68 yards (53 rushing, 15 on penalty) and extended the lead to 14-0 on a one-yard touchdown run by Ruemler.
The pattern of stern defense and running the ball continued throughout the third quarter as both teams put together solid drives, but were unable to get into field goal range.
Then early in the fourth Ruemler struck again with a 19 yard gain, followed by a 51 yard run into the endzone putting Seeger atop Attica 20-0.
Despite the shutout, Seeger players were disappointed in the outcome of the game, but not in their effort.
For Seeger defensive coach Tom Cook however, it was a good win after losing last week.
“(Head coach Rob Beckett) challenged everyone through the week and it showed today,” Cook said.
“It’s tough losing to (Seeger) every year,” said Attica running back and linebacker Jarrett Smart “We got a lot of guys on this team who care a lot. We’re gonna get back to practice this week, work hard and come out ready to play next week.”
Next week Seeger (2-1) looks to take on Riverton Parke and Attica (1-2) will face Rockville.
