IDNR brings out new EHD death reports

DANVILLE — The Illinois Department of Natural Resources recently announced updated results of monitoring of deer mortality in the state attributed to Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease. Since an earlier update on Sept. 6, many Illinois citizens have taken the time to make reports of sick, dead, and/or dying animals throughout the state. The IDNR Division of Wildlife Resources thanks those individuals who have taken time to provide information on EHD-probable deer mortality in the state.

As of Sept. 30, there were 2,043 deer reported as probable EHD deaths, with reports from 76 counties.

The highest numbers were reported from Cook (326); Calhoun (181); Coles (138); Macon and Shelby (121).

Deer Hunt need not be concerned about eating venison from animals that may have contracted EHD and survived. EHD has no impact on humans, pets, or livestock.

Hunters and landowners who find sick or dead deer that they suspect may be related to EHD, especially in or near water, are asked to contact their nearest IDNR field office or regional office to report them.

IDNR pushes safety for fall season

With Archery season now open for fall deer and turkey, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources is reminding all hunters to make safety a top priority when in the field this year.

While hunting is one of the safest forms of outdoor recreation, thanks to the diligence of law-abiding and safety-minded hunters, incidents do happen. Last year in Illinois, there were 26 hunting incidents, one of them fatal. There have been six hunting incidents reported in the state so far in 2012.

Whether in a blind or a tree stand, it is crucial that hunters are acutely aware of their surroundings including fellow hunters. Never take a shot without knowing what is beyond your target and always use the proper working equipment when ascending or descending from a tree stand,” said IDNR Director Marc Miller.

Of the 14 incidents reported in 2011 that did not involve discharge of a firearm or bow, 13 of them were tree stand falls.

Classic results

The Lake Vermilion Classic, the resulting final tournament for the Lake Vermilion Qualifiers held throughout the year, was held September 29th. The results are as follows:

1st Place — Shane/Don Myers, 6 fish for 14.27 pounds

2nd Place — Marc Chenoweth/Cody Varner, 5 fish for 11.18 pounds

3rd Place — Bob Nelson/Rob Caudill, 3 fish for 8.77 pounds

4th Place — Roger Seibert/Joe Cooke, 4 fish for 7.86 pounds

5th Place — Rick DePratt/Floyd Walton, 2 fish for 5.75 pounds

Big Bass — Shane Myers, 3.79 pounds
