Alexus Jimson-Miller signs up

DANVILLE — Alexus Jimson-Miller had options for her college track career but only one school stood out.

On Wednesday, the Danville High senior signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

“I know there are other places that I could have gone, but I turned those down,’’ Jimson-Miller said. “I couldn’t make myself go to a place that I didn’t want to go and I knew I wanted to go here.’’

Jimson-Miller, the defending Big 12 Conference champion in the 100-meter hurdles, the 200 dash, the 400 dash and the triple jump, also took visits to Michigan State, Illinois and DePaul before coming to her decision to sign with Miami.

While she felt comfortable with all four coaching staffs and all four programs, the Miami campus and Oxford, Ohio, gave the RedHawks the clear advantage.

“It’s a pretty place,’’ Jimson-Miller said. “It’s kind of like me, it’s not too much and it’s not too flashy. It was my first visit and it set the bar for the rest of the schools.

“It’s taken me a while to get here, but it’s definitely a relief and I’m really happy to get it done.’’

Jimson-Miller is one of five athletes to sign with the RedHawks on Wednesday and coach Kelly Phillips sees her filling a big role on their team.

“Alexus is not only a top 20 hurdler in the U.S., but she is so versatile that she will be able to help us in short and long sprints, hurdles, and relays,’’ Phillips said. “She has tremendous talent and will come in, in a position to make an immediate impact.”

By signing on Wednesday, Jimson-Miller knows that she will now be able to concentrate her efforts on her final season.

“Once track starts in a few weeks, I will just be able to do my best without having to worry about where I’m going to go or what I’m going to do,’’ she said. “I really thankful to everyone that helped me get here, all their motivation and all of their support.’’

Jimson-Miller said she hasn’t decided on a major.
