DACC softball gets cancelled

DANVILLE — The new era of Danville Area Community College softball will have to wait for a year.

On Tuesday, DACC athletics director Tim Bunton announced the spring season was cancelled for lack of numbers with the current team.

DACC coach Randy Skaggs, who was supposed to start his first season as Jaguars coach, said key injuries lowered the team number.

“We had three key injuries and two big ones was Meghan (Bunch) and Delaney (Bruce) because they were our tow top pitchers,” Skaggs said. “So we could not get the numbers and we tried everything to get started but we just could not do it.

“We tried a lot of things, including asking basketball players to come out, but with their season running into the tart of our season, it would have been tough.”

The saving grace is that players will continue to practice and scholarships will still be honored.

“I am pleased that we are going to have practices and that they keep the scholarships and they will also not lose a year of eligibility,” Skaggs said. “They will still have a chance to go to a four-years school and possibly a fifth-year, which we call masters, so that is the good thing that comes out of this.”

Another good thing to come out of it may be next season, when the Lady Jaguars has 14 verbal commitments ready to play.

“We have two girls from Plainfield, Ind. and two from the St. Louis area, so I think we will have a solid team for next season,” Skaggs said. “So I am excited for next season and I think we will be a good team.”

“It is disappointing but the girls will stay and practice and we are going to move forward,” Bunton said. “(The commitments) are a step in the right direction.”
