Crider tries to build new DHS era

CHAMPAIGN — Danville High School wrestling has always been a program trying to build consistency in the area in getting a feeder system.

Second-year coach Terrence Tetter has worked hard to build a system and one of the early fruits of that labor, freshman 113-pounder Javeonte Crider, will start action today in the Class 2A state wrestling finals at Assembly Hall in Champaign.

Crider has a 23-4 record this season and will start the tournament against East Moline United’s Jeronnie Stewart.

“His four losses were against state-ranked guys, so he has run into some tough competition this season,” Tetter said. “He is the only freshman at 113 but he will be ready to go.”

Crider was a part of the Lionheart Intense Wrestling Club in Danville, a club for kids that Tetter is working with to build a system that will bring top wrestlers to the program for their high school years.

“His father runs Lionheart and it is a place where we have gotten some kids for the past few years,” Tetter said. “If you look at some of the best programs in this area, they have a feeder system and that is something that we are trying to do.”

Crider went through the season, winning the Metamora tournament and regionals at Mahomet, before taking second in last week’s sectional in Mattoon.

“He is a talented kid and he is excited to come here and represent the school and Danville,” Tetter said. “He is ready to give the city a high finish.”

In Class 1A, Oakwood’s Antonio Alvarez (30-8) starts his drive in the 126 pound class against Herscher’s Brandon Malone while teammate Austin Shelton (32-12) will take on Plano’s Ivan Lopez.

Bismarck-Henning’s Jared Noel (170) will take on Benton’s Zach Mocaby at 170 while teammate Morgan Supergan (31-2) starts against Harvard’s Adam Freimund at 285. Supergan’s only two losses have been in regional and sectional action to top seeded and undefeated Josh Wallick of Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley.
